Shays’ Rebellion and Whiskey Rebellion

Shays’ Rebellion (1786) and the Whiskey Rebellion (1791–1794) were pivotal uprisings that exposed weaknesses in early American governance. Both revolts arose from economic hardship, high taxation, and dissatisfaction with governmental authority. Shays’ Rebellion revealed the failures of the Articles of Confederation, prompting the creation of the U.S. Constitution, while the Whiskey Rebellion demonstrated the new federal government’s power to enforce its laws. Together, they shaped the evolution of American democracy and federal authority.
