Piaget’s and Kohlberg’s Theories: Differences and Similarities
Lawrence Kohlberg’s cognitive stage development theory builds on Jean Piaget’s work on children’s moral growth. While Piaget emphasized the progression of moral reasoning from consequences to intent, Kohlberg expanded this with a six-stage model focusing on justice and rule comprehension. Despite criticisms of both theories, Kohlberg’s framework is particularly useful in educational settings, where it helps instructors guide students through moral development by fostering autonomy and rule-making participation.
