“Mericans” by Cisneros and “In Response to Executive Order 9066” by Okita
Sandra Cisneros’ Mericans and Dwight Okita’s In Response to Executive Order 9066 explore cultural identity among Mexican and Japanese Americans during the 20th century. Cisneros uses metaphors and bilingual dialogue to depict children’s complex relationships with Mexican heritage. Okita employs similes and a poignant narrative to show a Japanese-American girl’s conflicted emotions during WWII internment. Both works, through children’s perspectives, highlight how cultural and political pressures shaped identities in America’s multicultural landscape.
