Diagnosing Depression in Squidward from SpongeBob
Squidward Tentacles, a central character in SpongeBob SquarePants, is often portrayed as a grumpy, discontented neighbor. However, his behavior reveals deeper psychological struggles consistent with symptoms of depression. Through episodes such as Band Geeks, Artist Unknown, and Talent Show, Squidward exhibits constant sadness, irritability, social withdrawal, and loss of interest in hobbies. This paper analyzes his actions against clinical markers of depression to argue that Squidward’s character reflects a realistic depiction of the disorder in a fictional setting.
