Confucius: The Five Great Relationships
Confucius, an influential philosopher from 550 B.C., established an ethical system centered on the “Five Grand Relationships”: father-son, ruler-subject, husband-wife, elder-younger sibling, and friend-friend. Each relationship emphasizes specific roles and mutual obligations, often defining one party as superior and the other as inferior. Success in these relationships depends on virtues such as kindness, loyalty, obedience, and respect, which foster harmony and balance in society. Confucius’ philosophy continues to shape relational ethics today.
