Analysis of the Short Story “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant

This paper examines Guy De Maupassant’s The Necklace as a critique of social class, marriage expectations, and the pursuit of status. Through Mathilde Loisel’s dissatisfaction and poor decisions, the story exposes the limitations imposed by class structures and the illusions of wealth. By weaving his personal observations of middle-class struggles into the narrative, De Maupassant highlights inequality and the consequences of valuing appearance over reality. The story ultimately serves as a social commentary on class oppression and misguided aspirations.
